Students will be identified for gifted education in the spring of their current school year with the intention of entering the program in the beginning of the next school year. All students are eligible to be recommended for the program.
January - District Benchmarks (i-Ready, Dibels, F&P Reading, etc.) will be conducted for all students.
May - CogAT and creativity assessments administered to students
June - Letters sent home to students identified as gifted through multiple measures.
Identification Rationale
In order to identify students for gifted education services, the Henry Hudson Regional School District will use a multiple-criteria approach. This means that students will be identified for these services by looking at many sources of information. Utilizing this approach allows all children to be considered for Gifted Education programming. Specifically, teachers will be looking to identify students who show exceptional strengths in creative thinking, critical thinking/problem solving, English Language Arts, and math. Research shows that truly gifted students fall into the top 2-5% of their peers.
"Twice Exceptional" Students
Twice exceptional students possess the qualities of gifted children, but may also have a specific learning disability. Due to the nature of the data that is being collected, twice-exceptional students may show aptitude in one or more areas of the matrix, which include, but are not limited to: Characteristics of learning, creativity, motivation, leadership, artistic, musical, dramatic, communication, mathematics, technology, etc. There are many areas where a student can demonstrate giftedness and as a district, we want to be sure to capture all of the students that would benefit from this program.
